Stroke Rehabilitation Program

Rebuilding Strength. Restoring Independence. Renewing Confidence.

A stroke can change life in an instant, creating challenges with mobility, communication, memory, swallowing, and everyday activities. At O’Neill Healthcare, our comprehensive stroke rehabilitation program helps patients recover function, regain independence, and return to the activities that matter most.

Our interdisciplinary team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, physicians, and specialists work together to create individualized rehabilitation plans that address each patient’s unique strengths, goals, and recovery needs.

For more than 60 years, O’Neill Healthcare has been a trusted healthcare partner for Greater Cleveland families, providing skilled nursing, rehabilitation, assisted living, memory support, and long-term care across a full continuum of services.

Understanding Stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, preventing brain tissue from receiving the oxygen and nutrients it needs. Brain cells begin to die within minutes, which is why immediate medical attention is critical. Approximately 2 million brain cells are lost every minute during a stroke.

Common Effects of Stroke

Stroke affects every person differently, but common challenges may include:

  • Weakness or paralysis
  • Difficulty walking or standing
  • Balance and coordination deficits
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Memory loss
  • Communication difficulties
  • Aphasia
  • Swallowing disorders (dysphagia)
  • Reduced ability to perform daily activities independently

These changes can impact physical health, emotional well-being, family relationships, and overall quality of life. Stroke recovery is not simply about survival. It is about rebuilding function, restoring participation, and helping individuals regain independence.

Recognize the Signs of Stroke: BE FAST

When a stroke occurs, every minute matters.
Use the BE FAST method to recognize stroke symptoms:
B – Balance – Is there a sudden loss of balance or coordination?
E – Eyes – Are there sudden vision changes, vision loss, or double vision?
F – Face – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A – Arms – Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S – Speech – Is speech slurred, confused, or difficult to understand?
T – Time – Call 911 immediately if any of these symptoms are present. Quick treatment can reduce brain damage and improve long-term recovery outcomes.

Stroke Prevention & Risk Management

Up to 80% of strokes may be preventable through proactive management of controllable risk factors.

Common stroke risk factors include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Atrial fibrillation (AFib)
  • Poor sleep quality and sleep apnea

Recovery after stroke is not defined by what was lost, but by what can be regained.
